Be Not Deceived by Strange Doctrines
“Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace…” (Hebrews 13:9)
From Eden until today, deception has always been the adversary’s weapon. The serpent told Eve in the garden:
- “You shall not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:4–5).
This was the first lie: denying God’s warning, offering hidden knowledge, and promising godhood apart from Him. Ever since, the world has been filled with teachings that echo this same deception—especially what is now called the esoteric path.
What is the Esoteric Path?
The esoteric path refers to spiritual systems that claim to hold hidden knowledge (from the Greek esōterikos, “inner” or “secret”). They appear in many forms—Hermeticism, Gnosticism, mystical Kabbalah, Theosophy, Rosicrucianism, New Age spirituality, and others.
Though diverse, they share common traits:
- Hidden Wisdom (Gnosis): Truth is said to be veiled in symbols, myths, or rituals and available only to the initiated.
- Yet the Bible says: “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever” (Deuteronomy 29:29).
- Divine Spark in Man: Humanity is believed to contain a fragment of divinity that must be awakened.
- But Scripture teaches: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). We are not divine sparks, but fallen beings in need of redemption.
- Self-Transformation for Salvation: Progress is gained through meditation, rituals, asceticism, or mystical knowledge.
- The Bible proclaims: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9).
- Union with the Absolute: The goal is often the dissolution of the individual soul back into a universal Source.
- God’s Word promises instead: “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3). Believers remain children of God with eternal life, not absorbed into an impersonal force.
The Bible Versus the Esoteric Path
The serpent’s lie in Eden is the foundation of the esoteric way. It whispers: “You will not die. You will be like God. You can know hidden truths.”
But God’s Word consistently warns:
- “Take heed that no man deceive you” (Matthew 24:4).
- “Let no man deceive you with vain words” (Ephesians 5:6).
- “Be not deceived: God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:7).

Deception in the Last Days
Jesus Himself warned:
- “For false christs and false prophets shall arise, and shall show signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect” (Mark 13:22).
Paul likewise declared:
- “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears” (2 Timothy 4:3).
The esoteric path is one of many “strange doctrines” that carry the same DNA as the serpent’s first lie. They promise life, light, and godhood apart from God’s grace, but lead only to death and separation from Him.
Established With Grace
The answer to deception is not deeper philosophy or stronger intellect, but steadfast faith in God’s revealed plan of salvation:
- “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men” (Titus 2:11).
- “In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).
Christ is not one of many paths—He is the only way. His grace, not hidden gnosis, is the true power to transform and save.
Conclusion
The first lie still whispers today: “You will not die… you can be like God.” But the Word of God declares the truth: “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
Let us not be deceived by strange doctrines. Let us cling to the grace of God in Christ, for in Him alone is eternal life.
“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8).
