Being Born of the Spirit: A Biblical Guide
What It Means to Be Born of the Spirit
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
— John 3:3
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”
— John 3:6–7
To be born of the Spirit means to receive a new spiritual life from God. Just as physical birth brings us into this world, spiritual birth brings us into the kingdom of God.
Why There Is a Need to Be Born of the Spirit
“Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
— John 3:5
“The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
— 1 Corinthians 2:14
“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”
— Romans 8:6
“Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:50
Human birth gives us life in the flesh, but the flesh is corrupted by sin. Only by being born of the Spirit can we enter God’s kingdom, understand His truth, and receive eternal life.
What the Spirit Does in the New Birth
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”
— Titus 3:5
“Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved).”
— Ephesians 2:5
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”
— Ezekiel 36:26–27
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”
— Ephesians 1:13
The Spirit regenerates, gives new life, removes the heart of stone, writes God’s law on our hearts, and seals us for the day of redemption.
How to Be Born of the Spirit
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
— John 1:12–13
“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
— Acts 2:38
“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
— Romans 10:9–10
A person is born of the Spirit by believing in Jesus Christ, repenting of sin, confessing Him as Lord, and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.
How to Know If You Are Born of the Spirit
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”
— Romans 8:16
“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
“We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren.”
— 1 John 3:14
“Hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”
— 1 John 2:3
“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”
— 1 John 3:9
The evidence of being born of the Spirit includes the Spirit’s inner witness, a transformed life, love for God and others, obedience to God’s Word, and freedom from sin’s dominion.
The Characteristics of Those Born of the Spirit
“The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”
— John 3:8
“As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
— Romans 8:14
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.”
— Galatians 5:22–23
“They that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
— Galatians 5:24–25
Those born of the Spirit are like the wind—directed by God, not controlled by men. They are led by the Spirit, bear the fruit of the Spirit, walk in holiness, and live in freedom from the flesh.
How the Spirit-Born Person Lives
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
— Galatians 2:20
“Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
— Romans 12:2
“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.”
— Colossians 3:2–3
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
— Philippians 1:21
The Spirit-born life is Christ-centered, transformed, heaven-focused, and lived in faith and obedience.
Conclusion
To be born of the Spirit is God’s requirement for entering His kingdom. It is a work of the Holy Spirit, received by faith in Christ, bringing a new heart, a new life, and a new relationship with God. The one born of the Spirit bears the Spirit’s fruit, walks in God’s ways, and lives with eternity in view.
