How Christians Should Respond When People Hate You—and Recruit Others to Hate You
As followers of Christ, we are not exempt from being hated, misunderstood, or even conspired against. Sometimes people will not only oppose you, but also gather others to stand against you. How should we respond, and what does God promise to do?
1. Expect Hatred—It Happened to God’s People Before Us
- “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” (John 15:18)
- Joseph was hated by his brothers (Genesis 37). David was pursued by Saul. Even Jesus was rejected, with crowds stirred up against Him (Matthew 27:20).
God reminds us: hatred from others is not new, nor is it the final word.
2. Don’t Retaliate—Leave Justice to God
- “Do not repay anyone evil for evil…It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord.” (Romans 12:17,19)
- In the Old Testament, God fought for Israel when enemies rose up (Exodus 14:14).
- In the New Testament, under grace, God still promises to defend His children, though He calls us to respond with love instead of revenge.
God’s character never changes—He is always our defender.
3. Guard Your Heart—Do Not Let Hatred Take Root
- “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)
- The enemy wants to poison your spirit with bitterness. But Christ calls us to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).
4. Respond With Love and Prayer
- “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44)
- This is not weakness—it is power. In showing love, you reflect God’s nature, who is merciful even to the undeserving.
5. Stand in Integrity—God Will Vindicate You
- “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord.” (Isaiah 54:17)
- “For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.” (1 Peter 2:15)
When you keep walking in truth, God Himself will silence the lies.

- Do not hate back.
- Do not be shaken.
- Do not lose faith.
- Do what is right, and let God fight for you.
Because from Genesis to Revelation, in the Old Covenant and in the Era of Grace, God has not changed—He is still our Protector, Defender, and Deliverer.
